Darth Maul is one of the most impressive Star Wars roles. To those who only know the films, he’s the daunting, red-faced Sith who Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan face off upon at the end of The Phantom Menace. But that’s just the tip of the monstrous spikey-headed iceberg.
Before his surprise cameo in Solo, The Clone Wars and Rebels fleshed out the role enormously, giving him a recovery arc for the ages, but one thing we never see on-screen is how accurately he met Palpatine and embraced the dark path.
That’s a disgrace because if we have a closer look at the original confrontation between the Sith Lord and his ill-fated companion could tell not only where Star Wars has been, but where the privilege may be traveled next.
In the comic series Darth Maul: Son of Dathomir, Maul’s parents finally reveal. Palpatine was watching to master the art of manipulating the Force for evil and so returned to the Nightsisters, a coven of what are actually witches of the Force.
He discussed with Nightsister Mother Talzin and thought of making her his assistant, but rather stole her newborn son away from her, a son who would next go on to be known as Darth Maul.
The story would need a little addition, as Son of Dathomir has Maul facing off upon Count Dooku, who had his head lightsaber-scissored off before the proceedings of The Bad Batch. But a story of Maul’s revenge against his former Sith lord for the sake of his mother seems timeless within the Star Wars universe.
